Our story begins...
Our story begins...
...in Kirkegata, Oslo city centre, in 1926. Here, Carl Bredengen founded the import business Carl Bredengen & Co. Chemicals, porcelain, and textiles originally accounted for the sales, but Carl did not stop there; soon, both the product range and customer base grew rapidly.
Became partners through post
Became partners through post
The beginning of what would prove to be our most important partnership with manufacturer Huber + Suhner, started with a post card from Switzerland in 1936. Suhner, as the company was then called, invested heavily in radio and telecom technology. They were known for their high quality and precision, and much of their technology originated from the watch industry in Switzerland and South Germany. Today, Huber + Suhner is our most sought-after manufacturer. But the adventure had a slow beginning; the first order from Suhner was placed in 1939, just before the outbreak of the Second World War. The commission from the sale did not appear until 1946.
New forces step in
New forces step in
Carl Bredengen ran the business until his death in 1958. Unfortunately, he passed without heirs. Who would continue the business in his place? The solution proved to be the newly hired Georg Andersen, who was given permission by Bredengen’s widow to buy the company. At this time, sales were still mainly made up of porcelain, ceramics, and textiles; the technology components from Huber + Suhner were waiting for their big break.
Television takes Norway by storm
Television takes Norway by storm
1958 brought big changes; the television entered the Norwegian home. This was the year we got out first cable order of a decent size from NRK, Norway’s national broadcaster. The channel was impressed, and soon developed a strong preference for Huber + Suhner’s products. The purchase was followed by a series of large orders from NRK, the telecommunications network, and Tandberg radio factory.
Growing demand
Growing demand
In the 60s, 70s and 80s, demand for Suhner products grew rapidly, and Bredengen made the decision to become a niche supplier. Since then, these products have defined who we are and laid the foundation for our status as a leading supplier of components to the transmission and communication technology in Norway.
The modern Norway is built
The modern Norway is built
During the 1980s, major developments began in Norway. This opened the door for many new, exciting possibilities. In 1980, Bredengen supplied cables to the new Holmestrand tunnel. Our products made listening to the radio deep inside a tunnel possible. We also supplied coaxial cables to Statfjord A, which enabled communication between the legs of the platforms using walkie-talkies.
Today
Today
In 1997, Jan Erik Andersen took over the ship and Bredengen became an AS. Today, we are the market leader in components for transmission and communication technology. From sensitive airport landing system to advances sensor technology; from high-flying F-35 to the network of tomorrow; within all of these high-tech products, across industries, you can find a specialty cable from Bredengen. Our business currently has 16 employees. And just like in 1926, our goal today is to please our customers, contribute to innovation and take care of our employees. In this way, Bredengen will continue to lead the race the next 100 years.
